An extract from Wikipedia:

Son of the American painter James Desvarreux-Larpenteur, he was a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme then of Jean Baptiste Detaille . He painted landscapes, horses and hunting scenes like his father, but exhibited at the Paris Salon large compositions celebrating the campaigns of the Revolution and the Empire and the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871. He participated in the panorama of the Battle of Waterloo under the direction of Louis Dumoulin in 1911-1912, and received a medal of 3 class in 1910 and a gold medal at the Salon of French artists in 1913.

He was a member of the Society of Military Painters at the end of 1913, approved by the Musée de l'Armée early December 1914 and appointed painter of the Ministry of War in February 1915.

He was mobilized in 1914 as a corporal in the 25 th Territorial Infantry Regiment and fought in the North, Cambrai , Bapaume and Noyelles . In October 1914 he is hospitalized in Doullens and will be declared unfit for service the following March. He went on a mission, for the first time, to the Somme in December 1914. In the many theaters of operations he travels, he often performs interpreter functions due to his American origins. He met multiple units of the French and Allied armies, the uniforms of which he represented in numerous small paintings intended for the Army Museum (150 are still preserved there). These works are as many portraits of soldiers and officers crossed on the front line. He adds representations of equipment or scenes of trenches and cantonment.

After the War, Raymond Desvarreux will completely abandon military painting for the landscape. He exhibited at the Salon of French artists in 1929 the paintings Les Grandes maneuvers , Le Rêve , Sous-bois and a portrait.

He did not return there until after 1945 with scenes from the battles of the Empire.

Through his work for the Musée de l'Armée, Raymond Desvarreux appears as a talented, honest and scrupulous artist, both portrait painter, horse painter and landscape painter.
