18th Century French stone salt mill

SKU: 5206

US$1,054

A granite salt mill dating from the 18th Century, possibly earlier. From the Auvergne region of France. Salt was originally put in the top, then a handle was turned and the top half of the stone ground the salt into powder. The handle is missing. There is a fox carved into the rim. This was a fairly typical apparatus in homes at this time.

Due to the age of the piece there is some woodworm in the base. This has been treated.

Condition and patina consistent with age.

Approx. 18” x 13 ½'' x 11 ½'' high overall
Approx. 46cm x 34cm x 29.5cm high overall
