He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, receiving the Stanislas-Torrents and Poggioli prizes, before continuing his training in Paris. In 1951, he placed first in the competitive entrance examination for the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, where he went on to earn a diploma in mural art. In 1955, Briata joined the studio of noted French modernist painter Marcel Gromaire (1892–1971), whose work had a lasting influence on his own. Briata returned to Marseille and in 1960 became a professor at the city’s École des Beaux-Arts. He also developed a long relationship with Galerie Jouvène, where he exhibited regularly until 1990. Over the course of his career, Briata’s work was exhibited internationally, including in New York, Tokyo, Montreal, Geneva, Beirut, Boston, Miami Beach, Lyon, and Paris.
