Crafted from wrought iron, copper and bronze, it comprises two fixed panels and a central hinged gate. The gate features four bronze relief plaques, signed G. Bernardin, representing the Four Evangelists through their traditional symbols: the winged man, lion, ox and eagle. On either side, bold circular floral designs are surrounded by beautifully worked grapevines, leaves and ears of wheat, symbols associated with the Eucharist. Horizontal copper bands introduce a lovely contrast of color and material. The three heavy, solid sections have developed a rich patina with areas of oxidation and wear. The decoration is worked on the front only, and the sections vary slightly in height, a difference that could be accommodated when they are anchored into the ground.

Georges Bernardin (1894–1974) belonged to a distinguished family of artistic ironworkers established in Clermont-Ferrand. His work can still be admired in several important buildings in the city, including the Bishop's Chapel, for which he created the ironwork in 1936, and the former Sabourin Sanatorium, now the Clermont-Ferrand School of Architecture. Recognized for his craftsmanship, he was awarded the prestigious title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France in 1962. This screen beautifully illustrates his mastery of metalworking, combining the bold geometry of Art Deco with the richness of traditional religious imagery.

A remarkable piece of French architectural heritage, this chancel barrier has a strong decorative presence and exciting possibilities for contemporary interiors. The three sections could be incorporated into a low partition, installed across an interior opening, or used to define a private prayer space or home chapel, in keeping with their original purpose. Alternatively, they could be displayed against a wall as an impressive architectural composition. Its craftsmanship, history and unusual combination of materials make it a fascinating piece for a collector or an interior designer looking for something truly distinctive.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
Each panel measures approx. 27½" high x 41¾" long x 1½" thick (hinges not incl.)
Each panel measures approx. 70cm high x 106cm long x 4cm thick (hinges not incl.)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1166/6698/files/DSC01387_9b050ba0-d3e2-49bd-bc6a-9ebb47ded8ef.jpg?v=1793359912
https://www.chezpluie.com/products/exceptional-three-part-french-art-deco-chancel-barrier-by-master-ironworker-georges-bernardin
