The decoration extends across the lid, sides and even the underside, where a large elephant is engraved. An interlaced monogram, apparently OC, appears on the lid and is repeated on the sides, suggesting that the box was originally commissioned or personalized for a particular owner. \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe box stands on four petite lion-paw feet and is fitted with ornate scrolling side handles and a richly modeled carrying handle to the lid. It retains its key, and the lock is functional, although it should be operated with care given the age of the mechanism. The silvered surface has worn through in places, revealing warmer tones beneath and creating attractive variation across the deeply worked panels.
