large-antique-french-wooden-cutting-board-with-shaped-handle-231-4
Large Antique French Wooden Cutting Board w/ Shaped Handle - 23¼"

This large antique French cutting board, probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, is made from a thick single piece of wood with a broad rectangular working surface and an integral handle. The handle is particularly appealing, gently shaped and rounded from years of handling, with a smooth polish that contrasts with the heavily worked surface of the board. Across the top, generations of use have left a dense network of knife marks, scratches, shallow cuts and softened wear, while old wormholes, small age cracks and areas of darkened patina add further texture. A particularly curious detail survives along the underside edge, where fragments of old French newspaper remain adhered to the wood, an incidental trace of its past life that adds to the board’s character rather than detracting from it. Its large scale, simple silhouette and richly marked surface give the board a strong rustic presence.

Leaned against a kitchen wall, displayed on an open shelf or used as a backdrop for a collection of ceramics, it brings warmth and the visual interest of an object shaped by long use. The softened handle, worn edges and accumulated marks are precisely what make it appealing today, turning an everyday kitchen implement into a tactile piece of French folk domestic history.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
Approx. overall 23¼" long x 15" wide x 2" thick
Approx. overall 59cm long x 38cm wide x 5cm thick

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1166/6698/files/DSC09024_14c1f27d-3238-4233-8c24-f6b6cb2a22b4.jpg?v=1791194560
https://www.chezpluie.com/products/large-antique-french-wooden-cutting-board-with-shaped-handle-231-4
