The understated, somewhat medievalizing decoration, reminiscent of Romanesque carved stonework, gives it the appearance of a much earlier architectural fragment. Its generous proportions and low, spreading silhouette give it considerable presence, while decades outdoors have softened the surface to a warm, mottled patina of pale stone, darker weathering and traces of moss. It may originally have been raised on a pedestal and used as a basin.
