Cast in a dark, charcoal patinated metal (most likely spelter, though possibly incorporating additional materials) to emulate bronze, each displays a baluster form raised on a circular socle with laurel detailing. The bodies are animated with Bacchic reliefs of frolicking putti, closely echoing Clodion’s celebrated sculptural vocabulary. Around the rim, the loop handles are boldly modelled as stylised ram’s horns, lending a dynamic, sculptural presence to the silhouette.
Each vase retains its fitted zinc liner, and the pieces have a satisfying weight in the hand. The surface presents a soft, smoky lustre with gentle highlights to the high points, while natural wear at the edges reveals warmer undertones beneath the patina. There are some minor dents, small oxidation traces, and surface irregularities consistent with age and use, which contribute to their authentic, timeworn character. Evidence of an old internal repair with adhesive is visible to the bases, stable and not affecting display. Unmarked.

Claude Michel, known as Clodion, was one of the most esteemed sculptors of the 18th century, celebrated for his animated Bacchic subjects and fluid, sensuous modelling. The decorative vocabulary here draws directly from his work, with lively reliefs of putti, masks, and vine motifs reflecting a fascination with antiquity infused with a playful Rococo spirit. The prominent and fascinating mask add drama and expressive character while enhancing the sculptural richness. Revived in the 19th century, such compositions capture Clodion’s blend of classical subject matter and exuberant vitality, making the vases both scholarly and visually engaging.

A refined decorative accent, the pair brings depth, movement, and a touch of classical drama to an interior, lending gravitas and sculptural interest whether placed on a mantel, console, or within a curated shelf display.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
Each measures approx. 13¾" high x 8¾" wide x 7½"
Each measures approx. 35cm high x 22cm wide x 19cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1166/6698/files/DSC09328_e009804c-43d7-4421-a889-11d6aafcf066.jpg?v=1774615282
https://www.chezpluie.com/products/late-19th-century-neoclassical-pair-of-patinated-vases-w-bacchic-reliefs-in-the-manner-of-clodion-133-4
