At either end, winged female sphinxes are modeled in the round as if supporting the vessel, while the base is animated by mythical dolphins in high relief. The surface is richly enlivened with layered, freely applied glazes in cobalt, manganese, turquoise, and ochre over a speckled ground. The colors are softly blended and allowed to pool in the recesses, creating nuanced variations in tone and a fluid, painterly effect that enhances the depth of the modeling.
