Each bird is rendered with exceptional detail, from the individual feathers and subtle shifts of color to the carefully observed posture of the species. The compositions are notably spare, with each bird isolated against a broad expanse of pale paper, allowing the delicacy of the drawing and coloring to stand out clearly. Each plate is identified beneath with the bird’s French name, accompanied in some cases by its scientific designation, adding to their original scholarly character. The warm, aged tone of the paper, paired with the crisp typography at the footer, gives the group a refined, distinctly academic quality. The sheets show scattered foxing and gentle toning consistent with age and are presented under glass with green mounts and narrow giltwood frames.

Three of the prints come from Temminck and Laugier de Chartrouse’s Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d’oiseaux, published between 1820 and 1839, while the fourth, depicting the Pie-grièche à ventre roux, was published in Louis de Freycinet’s Voyage autour du monde in 1824. The sheets were later removed from their volumes and framed for display.

The vivid green mounts beautifully set off the softly colored birds, while the aged giltwood frames add warmth and a subtle sense of refinement. Hung closely together in a four-piece arrangement above a console, writing desk or chest of drawers, they would create an elegant focal point with both scholarly and decorative appeal. They could equally be dispersed through a library, hallway or stairwell, where their crisp compositions and softly aged surfaces would bring rhythm and interest to the walls.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
Each measures approx. 15¼" high x 12½" wide x 0¾" thick
Each measures approx. 39cm high x 32cm wide x 2cm thick

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1166/6698/files/DSC06787_0f88a51a-c66c-4b6e-ba0b-b63ff4fae15d.jpg?v=1789389251
