Bergier (1881–1971) - 18½" x 25½"

An oil-on-canvas view of the Ouvèze River and Roman bridge at Vaison-la-Romaine, signed A. Bergier and from the personal collection of Patricia and Walter Wells at Chanteduc. The subject is part of their everyday surroundings: the bridge is only moments from Chanteduc, at the foot of the winding village street, and they cross it on their way to Vaison’s Tuesday market.

Walter explains, “The bridge is Vaison’s Roman bridge, and this painting was to be the keystone of a collection of other paintings and photographs of the famous Vaison landmark. But the collection never really got off the ground,” adding with a smile, “We rarely agree on a painting, but never fight about it!”

Summer light filters through the riverside trees, with the ancient stone span visible beyond the foliage. Leaf greens, pale sky and warm stone form a balanced, natural palette. The brushwork is lively but controlled, and the paint surface has fine, age-related craquelure while remaining stable. The painting is presented in a simple light oak frame that complements its restrained colours.

Alfred Bergier (1881–1971) was an Avignon-born Provençal painter known for his landscapes and architectural views. He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon under Pierre Grivolas and Gabriel Bourges and became a founding member of the Groupe des Treize in 1912. Established by Clément Brun, the group brought together thirteen Avignon painters and sculptors to promote regional artists and helped revitalise the city’s artistic life. Bergier exhibited in Paris and at regional salons, later taught drawing in Avignon, and is represented in the collection of the Musée Calvet.

More than a view of a celebrated local landmark, this painting records a place closely connected to Patricia and Walter’s daily life at Chanteduc.

Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
Approx. overall 18½" x 25½" x 1½" incl. frame
Approx. overall 47cm x 65cm x 4cm incl. frame

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1166/6698/files/DSC00187_4c8dce38-d7c6-4403-868a-9b9a8de749af.jpg?v=1787218555
https://www.chezpluie.com/products/the-roman-bridge-at-vaison-la-romaine-by-a-bergier-1881-1971-181-2-x-251-2
