A detailed watermill anchors the wooded landscape to the left, while cattle, sheep, and elegantly dressed pastoral figures animate the foreground beneath a canopy of dense foliage. The scene is enclosed by a narrow floral border in warm reds, ochres, greens, and blue. The tapestry survives in very good condition for its age, with only a few discreet restorations to the border. Aubusson, granted the collective title of Manufacture Royale in 1665, became celebrated for the quality and sophistication of its large-scale verdure and pastoral tapestries. Worked by hand in wool and silk on low-warp looms, these hangings were prized for their nuanced color, fine detail, and ability to create richly immersive interiors.
