An impressive mirror in the Régence taste, likely assembled in the 19th century from a combination of elements of varying dates, creating a richly layered decorative composition. The rectangular frame encloses a central plate bordered by marginal mirrors, set within finely carved and water-gilded wood. The inner moldings feature delicate linear ornament in the manner of Bérain, associated with the late Louis XIV period, while the openwork crest above, with its flowing acanthus scrolls and central cartouche, introduces a lighter and more animated character suggestive of early 18th-century design.
The piece shows clear signs of its composite nature, with later corner repairs to the inner mirror border, these assembled elements contributing to its unique character and visual interest.
The mercury glass panes have developed an atmospheric patina, with areas of bloom and foxing, particularly toward the lower sections, and a small break visible to the upper left corner. The gilding has mellowed to a warm, honeyed tone, with wear to the high points revealing the rich red bole beneath, adding depth and authenticity to the surface. The crest appears intact, and the mirror remains sound and ready to hang.
Blending structure and movement, this mirror’s layered composition lends a distinctive decorative presence. Striking above a mantel or console, it brings light, texture, and a sense of history, offering a refined focal point suited to both classic and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
