Once an industrial crucible from a metal foundry, this substantial vessel, with its tall, slightly tapering rounded form, now reads as a sculptural planter with a quiet, elemental presence. Made of refractory ceramic and dating to the mid 20th century, its surface displays a rich interplay of muted terracotta and dusty rose tones layered with mossy olive greens and charcoal undertones, creating an earthy, mineral palette that feels both organic and timeworn. The exterior is pitted and lightly vitrified from intense heat, resulting in a granular texture that subtly catches the light. A generously sized drainage hole has been added at the base, allowing the vessel to be repurposed as a planter; lining the interior with a flat stone or shard of tile will help temper the generous opening.
This piece brings an earthy calm to interiors and gardens alike. Use it on a terrace or in a sunroom planted with an olive or citrus sapling, or a sculptural topiary. Alternatively, add a discreet liner and it becomes a bold umbrella stand or a vessel for kindling beside the fireplace. Its rugged finish and pared-back silhouette lend a sense of timeless assurance in any setting.
