This large two-handled orjol - the distinctive water cruche of the Languedoc region in southwest France - dates to the late 19th to early 20th century. Notably more rounded and full-bodied than the taller, more slender examples typically encountered, it was hand-thrown in terracotta with a generous ovoid form, a short collared neck, and twin ribbed loop handles, one incorporating a small integrated pouring spout, a characteristic feature of the type. The upper section is finished in a warm ochre glaze that pools softly around the shoulder, while the lower body is left unglazed, a practical choice that encouraged evaporation to help keep water cool.
The surface shows scattered glaze losses, small chips to the rim and handles, and a well-worn base, all consistent with long use in rural households. These signs of wear lend the piece an authentic, timeworn presence and speak to its utilitarian past.
With its generous scale and sunlit color, the orjol brings effortless warmth to an entry, kitchen, or garden room. Display it on a console or farmhouse table as a sculptural accent, or style it with dried branches or grasses for a simple, understated arrangement. Its earthy palette pairs beautifully with natural stone, aged wood, and linen, adding a grounded, quietly elegant note to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
