A pair of French Art Deco bookends dating from about 1920 to 1930, modeled as lively terriers. The dogs are cast in metal with a bronze-brown patina, their textured coats, alert ears, and extended paws finely detailed. Each figure stands on a rectangular marble base in tones of charcoal, taupe, and cream, the natural veining providing a pleasing contrast to the metal. The pair remains in very good condition with gentle wear to the high points, light oxidation, and a few tiny nicks along the marble edges.
Charming and expressive, these bookends capture the Art Deco taste for stylized animal forms with lively detail and a sense of movement. The terrier motif reflects the early twentieth century affection for companion animals, celebrating their spirited and playful nature. Both decorative and practical, they add warmth and character to a desk, shelf, or library.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
