This exceptional and rare petite Italian maiolica salt cellar, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century and likely from the Veneto region, exemplifies the lively artistry of its period. Formed as a rounded bowl on a molded pedestal foot, it features two applied figural term handles and a shallow recessed well for holding salt. The body is richly hand-painted in cobalt, ochre, green, and manganese with scrolling foliage and fantastical creatures, while the top reserve depicts a charming Venetian gondola scene. Old restoration to the foot and one handle are visible, and the tin glaze shows fine craquelure and gentle surface wear consistent with age. The piece was designed to display salt openly on the top rather than as a covered vessel, and does not present a lid or interior cavity.
Salt cellars were prominent markers of status on the Baroque table in Europe, placed before honored guests and refilled throughout the meal. This example reflects the enduring maiolica tradition, its tin-glazed surface allowing saturated color and crisp line work carried over from Renaissance models into the Seicento and early Settecento. The grottesche and hybrid creatures echo auspicious imagery long favored in Italian decoration, while the gondola scene pays homage to Venetian life and commerce. Comparable wares were produced by workshops across the Veneto and other northern centers such as Faenza and Montelupo, noted for bright antimony yellow set against deep cobalt blue.
Though not in perfect condition, this rare and captivating piece retains immense charm and visual interest. Its softly aged surface, visible restorations, and gentle wear only enhance its character and sense of history. Display it on a dining console, buffet, or within a cabinet of curiosities, where its intimate scale invites close appreciation. It pairs beautifully with Venetian glass or other colorful maiolica, adding a spirited touch to a kitchen shelf or breakfast room. On the table, its shallow top well can still hold a pinch of flaky sea salt, offering a quietly historic accent to everyday service.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
