This set of two openwork brass baskets, dating to around 1900, comprises one larger and one smaller example and is richly detailed with hand-raised and chased botanical and trellis motifs characteristic of the late 19th century and the emerging Art Nouveau taste. The pierced sides form an intricate lattice enlivened by delicate floral forms, while scalloped rims echo the organic curves popular in the period. Each basket rests on four small ball feet and is fitted with shaped side handles, lending both elegance and ease of handling. The brass retains a warm, golden tone that has mellowed beautifully over time. The surfaces show a pleasing, timeworn patina, with light rubbing, minor bends along the rims, and scattered oxidation that add to their antique charm.
Sets of this kind were intended for table or sideboard use, as fruit baskets, bread servers with a linen liner, or decorative cachepots. Today, they retain those same elegant purposes, looking beautiful on a dining table for fruit or bread, or styled on a sideboard, coffee table, or entry console as handsome cachepots. Their gentle shimmer and handworked detail bring a soft glow and a collected, graceful note to both classic and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
