This refined Louis-Philippe mirror dates to the mid-19th century, during the reign of Louis-Philippe (circa 1840–1860), a period celebrated for its understated elegance and gently rounded forms. The frame, true to the style, features the characteristic curved corners and minimal ornamentation, allowing the materials and patina to take center stage. Originally silver-gilt, the frame was crafted using layers of silver leaf over black gesso. Over time, much of the silver has softly worn away, revealing the matte black ground beneath. The resulting patina is rich with contrast, where remnants of the silver catch the light, they shimmer softly against the velvety dark background. This interplay of light and shadow gives the mirror a dramatic, almost architectural presence that works beautifully in both classical and modern interiors.
A fine foliate engraving runs along the edge of the frame, subtly animated by the surviving silver tones. The mirror glass itself is more recent and very clear, making it ideal for functional use. It would serve beautifully above a fireplace mantel, bringing a sense of quiet grandeur and history to a living room or library. Alternatively, it could anchor an entryway or be styled in a bathroom or bedroom, where its atmospheric frame enhances the space while still offering perfect reflection.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
