Antique French Olive Jars Biot Jars

Classic Antique Olive Jars

Large terracotta olive jars have long marked the entrance to a French house or anchored a corner of a garden, valued as much for their scale and presence as for their original agricultural use.

This collection brings together olive jars from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, alongside early nineteenth century Biot jars and storage jars from Fréjus, two of the regions most closely associated with French terracotta production. Earlier examples tend toward unglazed surfaces shaped by sun and weather, often bearing stamped rims or maker's marks from the workshop that produced them. Later pieces include glazed Biot jars and green glazed olive jars and tubes, where a band of color was applied to the shoulder or rim, and some retain original wooden lids fitted to protect the contents stored inside.

These jars hold their own as freestanding pieces on a terrace or beside a front entrance, and a matched pair works well flanking steps or framing a doorway. Smaller examples translate easily indoors, suited to a sunroom or conservatory, where they pair naturally with Anduze pots and other terracotta planters for a layered, considered grouping.

Each jar is measured, documented, and professionally photographed, with condition clearly noted, including any cracks, repairs, or losses typical of pieces this age. Stock reflects current availability. All jars ship from France and are professionally packed for safe delivery given their weight and fragility.

A well-placed olive jar brings genuine age and material history to a space that few other garden antiques can match.
