Elegant Late 19th Century Oak Cupboard W/ Polychrome Accents - 55" x 48" x 24½"

This two-door cupboard in solid oak, with traces of polychrome, dates from the mid to late nineteenth century and is likely Spanish or Italian. The case is robustly framed with chamfered stiles and fielded panels, each door enriched with stepped cartouche moldings highlighted by remnants of verdigris green and ochre tints over a warm umber stain. A deep molded cornice projects above a conforming base and lifts off as a separate element, while the whole rests on a stout plinth with corner block feet. The surface shows a beautifully timeworn patina with rubbed stain, scattered abrasions, age lines in the timber, and small chips to the cornice molding, details that enhance its understated elegance.

This type of cupboard reflects the persistence of Baroque vocabulary in rural workshops of both Spain and Italy well into the nineteenth century.
