This very large confit pot dates to the late 19th century and is a classic example of southern French pottery, once used to preserve duck or goose in its fat before refrigeration. Its generous, rounded shape and narrow footed base reflect the practical forms of the time. The upper section is finished in a rich amber glaze, with natural drips and tonal variations that flow down into the unglazed lower half. This contrast between the glossy ochre and matte stone base not only offered practical benefits - keeping the lower portion buried in cool earth - but now serves as a striking visual detail.
Twin looped handles sit high on the shoulders, allowing for easy lifting and storage. Time and use have left their mark, lending the surface a soft patina and irregularities that speak to its age and handmade nature. Today, this piece makes a beautiful decorative statement, perfect for styling in a kitchen, conservatory, or garden room. It can be used as a vessel for dried florals or branches, or simply appreciated as an enduring emblem of Provençal farmhouse life.
