Dating from the nineteenth century (Napoleon III period), this superb Louis XIII style mirror has a lovely parclose, mirrored frame decorated with gilded copper (cuivre repoussé) and painted green wood. It retains the orignal mercury glass and has a nicely aged patina. "Cuivre repoussé" translates to "repoussé copper" in English. Repoussé is a metalworking technique in which malleable metal, in this case copper, is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
