A rare 17th-century chapel figure from Burgundy, this carved wooden sculpture depicts a devotional figure, likely Saint Luke, holding a book before him, and retains much of its original polychromy and parcel gilding. The figure stands frontally, with softly curling hair and a voluminous robe carved in deep, stylized folds, the gilding catching the light and emphasizing the movement of the drapery. The face, with its wide eyes and slightly parted lips, conveys a gentle, contemplative expression that lends the figure a composed, contemplative presence. He rises from an integrated hexagonal base with layered traces of its original green paint. In timeworn condition, with losses to the gilding and polychromy, surface abrasions, and one arm missing; the surface appears untouched and unrestored.
Surviving examples in such untouched condition are increasingly scarce, making this a particularly compelling piece. This rare piece carries a strong sense of devotion and history. Its timeworn surface and surviving gilding speak to centuries of use and reverence, making it a compelling example of French ecclesiastical carving and a meaningful addition to a religious art collection. Displayed on a pedestal, bracket, or within a cabinet of sacred works, it retains the contemplative presence and spiritual gravity of its original chapel setting.
