8 ways to decorate with antique lanterns

Antique lanterns are such an elegant addition to a home. Whether they are used indoors or in the garden, they bring a warm glow that makes a space feel welcoming.

1. Pair lanterns at an entryway

Make a statement using symmetry with a pair of antique French lanterns either side of an entry porch. Hanging lanterns above over-sized garden pots is a lovely way to illuminate a sculptural garden feature.

2. Feature lanterns in an entryway

In a wide hallway or gallery entry, a wall-mounted lantern is a timeless choice. Here, a pair of antique lantern sconces frame a gilt mirror and console table, creating a beautifully symmetrical focal point. The central chandelier adds height and drama, drawing the eye upward and softly illuminating a floral arrangement below.

3. Lanterns along a corridor

A row of lanterns leading down a hallway is a lovely way to create rhythm in a long and narrow space. Whether or not they match is up to individual taste - mismatched lanterns can bring a more rustic touch.

4. Hang a lantern in a stairwell

Pendant lights in stairwells are enjoyed from all levels - below and from above. As antique French lanterns can be enjoyed from all sides, they make the perfect choice for a stairwell.

5. Dine under the light of a lantern

A large lantern can easily be the hero of a dining room or kitchen. It can hang lower than other lights and can be used with candles for a moody ambiance.

6. Antique lanterns as decor

Lanterns look beautiful when displayed on a console or buffet, especially with candles and among other curios. You can enjoy their detail and scale up close and in a different way.

Create a French farmhouse feel with an antique French lantern hanging in a living room. Aged copper lanterns have a lovely sage blue patina which is beautifully accentuated by the choice of paint colour in this country farmhouse.

7. French lantern in a study

These antique lanterns are full of charm with their aged patina and timeworn metalwork. Displayed as a pair, they bring an old-world feel to an interior—try styling them with fresh blooms or candles to soften their strong, square forms.

8. Lanterns in the garden

This summer kitchen at La Ferme du Bon Dieu in Provence has a wonderfully relaxed feel. The antique lantern creates a wonderful atmosphere for summer evenings.

So magical! Ty so muvh!

Denise

We are remodeling a 1935 house that needs stripping away of an earlier remodel to create cleaner, more traditional spaces. Advice is appreciated. Thanks
