This enormous Louis XV period "Scriban de Chateau" secretary or writing desk large enough for two people and made of solid walnut is nothing short of exceptional. This secretary desk is undoubtedly a special order, likely commissioned for a notable individual of the period, such as a notary, doctor, or other esteemed figure.
The desk opens with a molded and carved abbatant*, both inside and out, the desk reveals a splendid theater-like interior. Within the abbatant, there are six crossbow-shaped drawers, adding both functionality and visual interest. At the center, a carved and molded door unveils a niche, adding an intriguing element to the desk's design. Topping it all off is a storage shelf, providing additional space for convenience. The sides of the desk are elegantly paneled in three sections, with a scalloped crosspiece adorning the bottom. Two wide crossbow-shaped drawers grace the front of the desk, offering ample storage.
The lower crosspiece is also crossbow-shaped and scalloped. Supported by four handsome, strongly curved, and arched cabriole legs, the desk exhibits a sense of elegance and stability. The bronze "Aux Valets" pull handles and original bronze escutcheon keyhole covers add a touch of luxury and authenticity to the drawers of the piece. The rich hues of the walnut are masterfully enhanced by the meticulous handwork of skilled artisans, unveiling a lustrous patina.
This desk is a true treasure ready to bring an inspirational writing setting to your home. Note the desk comes complete with its key for the top fold-out leaf piece. From the south of France and was crafted during the early-to-mid-eighteenth century.
