This 19th century walnut oil jar features the classic pot-bellied form associated with the rural pottery of the Quercy region. Hand-thrown in earthenware, the rounded body is finished in a rich, dark chestnut glaze that pools in the recesses and softens across the curves. A robust double-opening spout rises from the shoulder, flanked by two ribbed loop handles and a third handle at the rear for steady pouring. Raised, finger-applied cordons articulate the vertical seams and form a protective cross motif on the belly, their impressed detailing adding texture and rhythm to the surface. Scattered mineralized residues from walnut oil remain visible, subtly enlivening the glaze and directly attesting to the vessel’s original function.
This jar reads as a grounded, sculptural presence, equally at ease on a stone console, kitchen dresser, or dining room sideboard where it introduces warmth and substance. It may be left unadorned to highlight its expressive form and moody glaze, or filled with a few dried branches to gently soften its silhouette. The rich chestnut tones pair naturally with weathered wood, linen, and aged metal, while also providing a striking counterpoint in a pared-back, contemporary setting. Whether anchoring a vignette or standing alone against a plaster wall, it brings a sense of history, texture, and quiet authenticity to the space.
