A handsome 19th-century French confit pot from Southwest France, hand-thrown in a classic ovoid form with a particularly wide opening famed by twin loop handles. Its subtly irregular shape and gentle asymmetry reveal the hand of the potter. A warm mustard-yellow glaze covers the upper portion, contrasting with the pale unglazed body below, whose textured patina adds depth and character. Fine craquelure, kiln freckles, glaze wear, and expressive runs enliven the surface, including a striking green streak on one side and an ochre run on the other.
Originally used for preserving duck and goose confit beneath a seal of fat, pots of this type were glazed only on the upper portion, while the porous lower section could be partially buried in cool earth before refrigeration became widely available. The contrasting glaze marks, likely acquired through kiln contact during firing, further distinguish this example and enhance its visual appeal.
With its warm palette and richly textured surface, this confit pot brings authentic French country charm to any interior. Fill it with dried flowers, or use it as a rustic utensil holder in the kitchen. It adds a sense of history, warmth, and lived-in character that complements both traditional and contemporary interiors.
