Green conscience jug - late 18th century 12½"

SKU: 18724

US$1,062
This emerald green glazed conscience jug / oil jar dates from the late eighteenth century and is from south west France. Conscience jugs have a lovely history. They were used to collect olive oil for the poor after the olive harvest by the church. Carried by priests, after olive oil donations were given, the priest would then bless the donor's conscience. There is a surface crack in the glaze as seen in photos - this is not a crack in the terracotta and the pot is strong.

Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
Approx. overall 12½" high x 9" x 7½"
