A petite French ceramic wall cartel clock by the Longwy manufactory dated 1882. The sculptural case is modeled in tin-glazed earthenware with applied blossoms in soft blush and lilac set against a pale celadon ground. Rococo scrolls and leafy flourishes frame a patterned panel and a polychrome dial with Roman numerals and a gilt bezel, all gracefully proportioned for an intimate interior. The surface shows an appealing aged patina with glaze crazing, small scattered chips, and light wear to the gilding. The reverse bears a Longwy stamp and the date 1882.
The design reflects the Rococo Revival spirit, pairing asymmetrical scrollwork with naturalistic flowers inspired by 18th-century porcelains, especially those of Meissen. Pressed molds, applied petals, and delicate pastel glazes highlight the skill of the workshop and the era’s renewed fascination with the elegance of earlier decorative styles.
Founded in 1798 in Longwy in northeastern France, the manufactory became renowned for its finely decorated ceramics; its sculptural ceramic clocks of the late 19th century are the subject of growing interest and research among collectors. The clock retains its original movement; it has not been tested as the winding key is absent.
Charming on its own or anchoring a vignette, this small-scale cartel suits an entry, dressing room, or powder room where its soft palette and floral relief can glow in gentle light. Hang it above a console or alongside a trumeau and gilt frames, or let it soften a contemporary space with a whisper of Belle Époque romance.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
