A rare and historically evocative pressed glass tumbler likely dating to around 1851, featuring moulded decoration linked to the rise of Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte. The glass is decorated on one side with a profile portrait of Louis-Napoléon, encircled by the inscription “Louis Napoléon II Président”, while the reverse bears the initials “R.F. 1852,” framed by crossed flags and topped with a crowned eagle.
This type of object belongs to a fascinating category of political propaganda wares produced during a pivotal moment in French history. Elected President of the Second Republic in 1848, Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte was nearing the end of his mandate when such items were created to encourage public support for his continued leadership. Following the coup d’état of 2 December 1851, he consolidated power and, in 1852, proclaimed himself Emperor of the French under the name Napoleon III.
Both functional and symbolic, it offers a tangible glimpse into the visual culture of political messaging in 19th century France. A compelling collector’s piece, it would make an excellent addition to a historical display or cabinet of curiosities, or serve as a conversation piece on a desk or shelf.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
