A charming pair of circa 1900 majolica plates by Esberard, crafted in Apt, Provence. Beautifully moulded in relief, each plate is decorated in rich shades of emerald and moss green with an intricate grapevine leaf and tendril motif. The intertwining foliage creates a wonderfully sculptural surface, celebrating the vine, an enduring symbol of the Provençal landscape and its winemaking heritage. Both plates are stamped Esberard Apt on the underside.
The town of Apt has been renowned for its faience (tin-glazed earthenware) production since the 18th century, developing a distinctive ceramic tradition that flourished into the early 20th century. Alongside its celebrated marbled wares, Apt's workshops produced finely modelled majolica inspired by the natural world, combining richly moulded forms with luminous hand-applied glazes. These plates are a fine example of that craftsmanship, their glossy green glazes highlighting the crisp relief decoration, while subtle variations in tone and gentle glaze pooling attest to the traditional firing process and lend each piece its own unique character.
Perfect for serving bread, pastries or petits fours, they are equally striking displayed on a wall or shelf. The pair presents beautifully, with light wear and minor imperfections consistent with age and use, highlighting the vibrant glazes, naturalistic forms and fine craftsmanship for which Apt majolica is prized.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
