Originally crowning the roofline of a Parisian building, this rare pair of zinc œil-de-bœuf (bull's eyes) surrounds dates to around 1900. Their deeply moulded cornices and elegant oval openings exemplify the refined architectural language of the Belle Époque. Popularised in French architecture from the 17th century onwards, œils-de-bœuf were designed to admit light to converted attic spaces while enriching façades with graceful sculptural detail.
Crafted from sheet zinc, each surround is assembled from carefully joined sections that create a remarkable sense of depth and shadow. Over time, the metal has developed a beautifully nuanced patina, with soft silvery-grey tones, areas of darker oxidation, and traces of age that lend the pair exceptional character. Minor dents, edge wear, and small losses are consistent with their original use and only enhance their authenticity.
They can be hung as sculptural wall pieces, fitted with mirrors, used to frame artwork, or repurposed as dramatic interior openings between rooms. Displayed as a pair, they create a beautifully balanced composition above a fireplace, flanking a doorway or console, or punctuating a long wall with their bold architectural forms.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
