A charming small 19th-century French confit pot from the South of France, hand-thrown in a traditional rounded form with twin loop handles and a gently flared rim. The upper half is coated in a rich olive-green glaze with a soft glossy finish, while the lower section remains unglazed, revealing warm terracotta clay that provides a striking contrast to the vibrant green glaze. The surface is beautifully aged with glaze wear, kiln marks, scattered chips, and a richly developed patina that speaks to generations of use, its tactile quality further enhancing the pot's rustic character and authentic appeal.
Originally used for preserving food before the advent of refrigeration, pots of this type were glazed only on the upper section, while the porous lower half could be partially buried in cool earth to help regulate temperature and keep the contents cool.
Compact in scale and full of rustic character, this small confit pot makes a delightful decorative accent.
Whether displayed on open shelving, used to hold dried flowers or kitchen utensils, or simply admired on its own, it brings an authentic sense of French country living to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
