A rare post-Byzantine carved wood devotional panel from Greece, likely dating to the 17th century, depicting the Archangel Gabriel beneath an elegant arched canopy supported by twisted Solomonic columns. Richly embellished with gilding, colored glass cabochons, and striking inset glass eyes, the detailed carving was designed to catch and reflect candlelight, bringing the sacred figure vividly to life.
Gabriel is shown holding a staff, his traditional attribute as God's messenger, while in his other hand he presents a globus cruciger (orb surmounted by a cross), a symbol of Christ's sovereignty over the world and the triumph of the Christian faith. Together, these attributes emphasize Gabriel's role as both herald and servant of divine authority.
The panel was likely originally part of a larger devotional ensemble, perhaps forming one element of a cabinet door, icon shrine, or triptych. It may once have been paired with another archangel, most likely Michael, and a central image of Christ, creating a powerful visual statement of heavenly intercession and protection.
Whether displayed on a stand or mounted on the wall, it brings a sense of history, devotion, and quiet contemplation to an interior.
