A petite quadrilobed marble mortar with four rounded ears, hand-carved in pale grey to off-white marble, likely from 18th century. The thick rim and deep bowl rise over a gently tapered body with small sculpted drops beneath each ear, the surface showing crisp tool marks that lend texture and authenticity. Softened from years of use, the interior bears the smooth traces of countless preparations.
Once a Mediterranean kitchen staple used for grinding garlic, herbs, and spices, it reflects traditional craftsmanship and regional practicality. In good, timeworn condition with scattered nicks, light staining, and a softly weathered patina that speak to its long history and enduring charm.
This small mortar makes a quiet focal point on a kitchen island filled with limes, garlic bulbs, or coarse sea salt, or on a console layered with copper and faience. It can also cradle sprigs of fresh herbs or dried lavender for a subtle, natural accent. Perfect on open shelving or a farmhouse countertop, it brings texture and quiet authenticity to both rustic and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
