An 18th century serpentine commode from the Netherlands, raised on solid shaped feet and fitted with three drawers. The façade curves gently in a serpentine line with canted corners that soften the silhouette. The three full length drawers are articulated as a grid of nine molded panels, each carved with raised cartouches and scrolling foliate ornament, giving the surface a lively rhythm and strong decorative presence.
A later two tone painted patina in deep umber and pale biscuit tones beautifully evokes a timeworn surface and highlights the carving with quiet elegance. Rococo style bronze pulls and escutcheons are later decorative additions, and the key remains present though it no longer operates the locks.
Nicely proportioned and full of character, this commode brings quiet presence to an entry, bedroom, or living space. The mellow tones of its painted surface pair beautifully with linen textiles, antique ceramics, and patinated brass. It works equally well for storing linens or tableware in a dining room as it does for holding accessories and garments in a bedroom. Its gentle sheen and tactile surface lend warmth, depth, and Old World charm to both classic and pared back interiors.
