A striking 18th century processional lantern of hexagonal form, crafted in pierced tole and retaining its beautifully timeworn original red paint. The architectural silhouette, with its tiered pagoda-like top, pierced galleries, and elongated finial, gives the lantern an unmistakably exotic and theatrical presence, further heightened by its vivid red color.
Originally intended for religious processions, the lantern retains its large iron suspension hook, which allowed it to be mounted at the end of a pole and carried during ceremonies. The glasses have been replaced over time, while a small hole in the lower section bears witness to centuries of practical use. The worn red surface, with its losses, oxidation, and patina, gives the piece exceptional warmth and authenticity.
Whether suspended in an entry, stairwell, or covered outdoor space, this lantern brings immediate character and atmosphere. Even unlit, it reads almost like a sculptural object, its pierced metalwork and faded red tones creating a wonderfully cinematic presence. It could also be electrified for modern use, allowing the pierced decoration to cast warm patterned light while preserving all the charm of its original function.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
No electrical wiring included.
