A heavy enamel-on-steel direction sign from the Paris Métro, dating to the 1930s. The long, narrow panel presents deep cobalt blue block lettering reading “Gare du Nord – Place d’Italie - Étoile" across a clean white ground within a matching blue border, accompanied by a bold directional arrow. Its glossy vitreous surface remains luminous. Wear is honest and appealing, with scattered chips and small losses at the edges and around the fixing points revealing the steel beneath, along with light scuffs from years of public use. The crisp capitals and graphic arrow motifs embody the interwar emphasis on clarity in civic design, while the robust construction reflects the durability and material integrity characteristic of early transit signage.
In an interior today, the piece reads as strong graphic art with a quiet sense of history. Hang it above a console or along a hallway to emphasize length, center it over a doorway, or lean it within a gallery wall to break up framed works with a purposeful line. The blue and white palette pairs easily with pale walls, warm wood, or blackened metal, and its industrial character balances softer textiles and ceramics. The sign is pierced with eight holes for secure wall mounting.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
