This distinctive ceramic canteen from Biot, crafted in the 1950s, is a fine example of mid-century Provençal pottery. Made in the traditional style of "gourdes de voyage" (traveler’s flasks), it features a rich brown glaze highlighted with hand-painted green dots and a yellow floral motif at the center. The piece bears the signature stamp "B.I.O.T" enclosed in a square, identifying it as the work of a Biot potter and confirming its regional authenticity.  With its flat, undecorated back, this piece was designed to hang flush against a wall. The ceramic body rests on three short feet and includes side loops for its original woven rope, which adds both texture and historical context.
In the 1950s, Biot, a village in the South of France with a long-standing pottery tradition, became renowned for its distinctive artistic ceramics. Artisans there blended centuries-old techniques with modernist influences, producing handcrafted pieces known for their rustic formsand warm glazes. Today these pieces are prized for their rustic charm and sculptural presence. Ideal for hanging in a kitchen, entryway, or outdoor terrace, this canteen brings the warmth and spirit of southern France into any space. Its handmade character and vintage patina make it an appealing addition to a curated interior or collection of regional ceramics.
