Brimming with the folk-inspired charm of mid-century Vallauris ceramics, this hand-painted plate by Gustave Reynaud for Le Mûrier depicts a stylized figure flanked by two large indigo-blue flowers. Dressed in what appears to be traditional folk attire, the figure is rendered in a palette of deep blue, soft green, and earthy brown. The whimsical composition rests on a subtly crackled glaze that lends warmth and texture to the surface.
Created around 1955 in Reynaud’s Atelier Le Mûrier, founded that same year in the heart of the French Riviera pottery revival, this piece exemplifies his playful, graphic style rooted in both modernist abstraction and Provençal tradition. The expressive brushwork and naïve clarity of the design are hallmarks of Reynaud’s vision, where each object reflects the artist’s hand. The reverse is marked with his characteristic monogram and bears the same craquelure glaze and hand-thrown concentric rings that define the workshop’s refined craftsmanship.
Ideal for wall display or as part of a curated tabletop arrangement, this plate brings a touch of poetic simplicity and postwar French artistry to any setting. Another plate by G. Reynaud available to buy separately here
