A substantial circular enamel gas station sign for Texaco, produced for the French market and dating to the 1950s. Heavy gauge steel with a vitreous enamel face displays the classic red star with green T on a white ground, encircled by a bold red band reading "huile pour autos" (oil for automobiles). The colors remain vivid with a glossy sheen. The sign shows honest wear, including scattered enamel chips across the field, losses along the perimeter with light oxidation to exposed steel, and surface scuffs from outdoor display, all contributing to its authentic character.
This French language example reflects Texaco’s postwar presence in Europe, when international oil companies commissioned bold signs for roadside gas stations and garages. The five point star and green T emblem, a mid century version of the brand’s identity, reflects the confident graphic design of the era and the skilled enamel workshops that produced crisp lettering and luminous finishes built to endure.
This colorful sign lends industrial charm to a kitchen, mudroom, or loft wall, and anchors a vignette above a console or workbench. It pairs well with patinated woods, factory lighting, and vintage maps, or becomes a focal point in a motor themed study or bar. Indoors or in a covered garden outbuilding, it brings a storied note of vintage automotive culture.
