Sculptural and richly decorated, this ceramic candlestick was hand-painted at the Keraluc workshop in Quimper, Brittany, by André L’Helguen (1935–2017) during the 1960s. The compact, chalice-like form rises from a sturdy foot to a shallow bowl fitted with a central pricket for securing a taper candle. Sculptural yet simple, the form is animated by stylised florals, scrolling foliage, and folkloric medallions. A bold black graphic line runs through the decoration, sharply outlining the motifs and creating a striking contrast with lively touches of olive green, ochre, soft pink, inky blue, and ivory, lending the piece clarity and rhythmic presence. The glaze retains a gentle sheen with time-softened outlines, minor surface wear consistent with age, and small irregularities inherent to hand production. Signed beneath the base, the piece remains in very good vintage condition.
Founded in 1948, Keraluc became known for its artist-led approach, combining Breton folk traditions with a modern, graphic sensibility. Working closely with individual painters such as L’Helguen, the workshop produced expressive, small-batch ceramics that balanced strong form, have made Keraluc pieces enduringly appealing to collectors and decorators alike.
Related tall baluster candlesticks by the same artist are available for purchase separately here, and the three pieces group beautifully together, forming a balanced and sculptural ensemble with rhythmic variation in height and form.
