This mid-twentieth-century French majolica centerpiece bowl, stamped _Vallauris_ beneath the base, dates to around the 1960s. It is modeled as a woven basket with a braided rim and applied fruiting sprigs. The interior is molded in a square basket weave and glazed a rich emerald green, while the heavy braided border is finished in deep glossy black. Along the rim, shaded green leaves are punctuated by clusters of bright red cherries, their vivid color standing out in lustrous contrast against the darker tones of the basket. The piece reflects Vallauris’s postwar revival, when local ateliers reinterpreted traditional faïence with exuberant forms, bold glazes, and naturalistic ornament.
Basket motifs and applied fruit were especially popular in this period, uniting Provençal craft traditions with mid-century decorative exuberance. The dramatic pairing of glossy cherries and deep green glaze captures the era’s love of saturated color, artisanal modeling, and playful trompe-l’œil detail.
This bowl makes a striking accent on a kitchen island, breakfast table, or console, whether filled with colorful fruit or left empty. Its saturated greens and cherry reds bring cheer and decorative interest to open shelving and pottery displays, while the braided rim adds texture to both rustic farmhouse and traditional interiors. It can also serve as a generous catchall in an entry, bringing a touch of retro Provence style and a note of springtime charm to everyday settings.
