This large cast-iron Medici urn from the 1970s has the classic campana form, with an everted fluted rim above a smooth neck and a boldly gadrooned body. It rests on a waisted socle over a square plinth, giving it a dignified, architectural stance. The surface shows layered blue-green paint with warm russet oxidation, forming a rich patina. The rim bears a visible break.
Named after the celebrated antique marble krater, the Medici urn became a staple of European gardens from the 17th century onward. French foundries perfected the form in cast iron during the 19th century, and this 20th-century example continues the tradition with robust material and sculptural detail.
Ideal flanking an entry, anchoring a conservatory, or set on a terrace, it brings instant gravitas. Use it for clipped boxwood, olive, or seasonal flowers, or leave it unplanted as a striking sculptural accent indoors or out.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
