This handsome 19th-century French copper stockpot features a straight-sided cylindrical body with a broad rolled rim and a stepped domed lid topped by a loop handle. A small hanging loop on the lid offers a practical touch for organized storage when not in use. Wrought-iron side handles are mounted on shaped strap fittings, secured with hand-driven rivets. The copper surface glows with a bright, warm patina, enriched by subtle hammering and tool marks that reveal its hand-crafted origin. In good, timeworn condition, it bears scattered scuffs, a few shallow dents, and traces of verdigris near the rivets, all part of its authentic charm.
The copper stockpot became a kitchen essential in the 18th and 19th centuries, valued for its superb heat conduction and durability. Crafted in renowned centers like Villedieu-les-Poêles, these heavy-gauge vessels with iron handles were built to last and ideal for slow-simmered soups and broths. Cherished for their beauty and performance, they were often treasured for a lifetime and passed down through generations.
Displayed on a wall rack or range shelf, it lends warmth and authenticity to a kitchen, pantry, or butler’s pantry. Its rich copper surface pairs beautifully with stone counters, butcher block, and shelves of faïence. In a dining room or entry, it can serve as a characterful vessel for utensils or seasonal greenery while bringing a quietly historic note to the space.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
