A mid-19th century French neoclassical mirror in the Louis XVI taste, with a simple rectangular frame, with softly rounded moldings and quiet architectural lines. The narrow form gives it a graceful presence, while the worn gold leaf has mellowed over time to a soft, warm tone with gentle rubbing along the high points. The original mirror plate is framed by delicate flourishes and shows attractive foxing and age speckling that create silvery blooms across the glass. Hand-silvered mirrors of this era naturally develop gentle oxidation, a cherished patina that speaks of candlelit salons and corridors where pier mirrors sat between windows to amplify light.
Perfect for an entry, dressing room, or narrow hallway, this mirror brings verticality and a soft glow to layered interiors. Its slender proportions make it ideal between windows or doors, or on a narrow wall in a smaller entry.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
