This superb nineteenth-century pitcher is most unusual. The jug is finished in a warm orange-brown glaze, with decorative hand-painted wavy lines in cream and dark brown running along the sides. It has a rounded body with a single handle and a long, uniquely shaped spout. Likely originating from the Val de Saône or Jura regions, the half lid suggests it was a fisherman's jug, or "pichet de barque", designed to prevent water from spilling even on rough seas.
An interesting example of art populaire from this area, it reflects the practical craftsmanship and decorative charm typical of regional pottery.
