A charming 19th-century terracotta jar from Biot, distinguished by its rotund form and soft blush-yellow glaze around the neck. Hand-thrown in the Provence region of southern France, this petite jar exemplifies the traditional craftsmanship of Biot pottery, renowned for its robust, utilitarian forms and subtly luminous glazes. The jar is in very good condition, with a richly aged patina and no drainage hole at the base—ideal for interior display or dry storage.
Biot jars were historically used for storing and transporting olive oil and olives, often by boat along the Mediterranean coast. Their characteristic pear-shaped body and narrow neck helped minimize evaporation and spillage during transit. The glazed upper portion served to seal the vessel and protect its contents from insects and dust.
Today, these vessels are prized for their rustic Provençal elegance and are a hallmark of Mediterranean garden and interior design.
