This finely crafted French architect’s table in solid oak, dating to the late 19th century, features a sloped, hinged drawing surface that lifts to reveal storage beneath. The top includes a long slot for writing instruments and a brass-collared inkwell mount at one corner, now missing its pot. Its height adjusts smoothly on sliding uprights secured by side thumb-screws, while a frieze drawer with brass pulls and a working key provides practical storage. Paneled ends are framed by engaged turned columns, lending a subtle neoclassical balance. The oak displays a warm medium-brown tone with visible grain, aged over time to a handsome patina. The maker’s plaque is no longer present, though the piece is likely attributable to Feret, a distinguished late 19th-century maker of architectural and drafting furniture.
Ideal as a compact standing desk or reading lectern in a study or library, it also suits a creative studio for sketching and display. Use the interior compartment to store sketchbooks and stationery while the sloped top presents an open folio. Its small footprint and honest, timeworn oak finish add authentic atelier character to any room.
